Reflection of NETS-T Standard 3

http://www.iste.org/standards/nets-for-teachers/nets-for-teachers-2008.aspx

Standard three states that teachers should “Model Digital-Age Work and Learning”.  I believe that this standard means that teachers should know how to use technology and demonstrate that he or she knows it. The teacher should be able to transfer what he or she already knows into something that is technologically based and use it in the classroom. Today teachers are having to write lesson plans on the computer and submit them that way, rather than handwriting them  out and bringing them to the principal. So teachers that are used to handwriting them have to adapt to writing them on the computer.  Also, there are programs out there like Turnitin.com that will check papers for plagiarism and that would be very beneficial for a teacher to learn how to use it. The teacher should be able to communicate with the students, parent and other people using technology. I believe that that means that teachers should be able to use email and also have their own websites so other people can view it. The parents and community members can view things that are going on in the classroom and view upcoming events if the teacher keeps an updated website. If the parents permit, the teacher can add pictures of his or her students and post the students creative work on the website. It is important for the teacher to stay in touch and involved with the parents of the students. They need to know what is going on in the classroom.  The teacher needs to know how to incorporate the use of current technology and emerging technology in the classroom.  As a future teacher, I plan to keep an updated website to let everyone know what is going on in the classroom and I plan to communicate with the parents on a regular basis.

  1. I agree that I am going to try my best to be technology savvy as the years pass. You are right in saying that many things are changing from handwritten to electronic. We must make sure we know about technology so that we can teach our students about technology.

  2. Very good point teachers need to be able to take an control and use what they know in other aspects of their teaching and use this to incorporate technology. Teachers having their own websites is a plus to parent/teacher communication.

  3. I agree that it is important for teachers to actually understand technology enough to be able to demonstrate how it's used. Incorporating technology more into the classroom can help with understanding it better.

  4. I think it is amazing how far technology has come, just since my elementary years. You are absolutely right that as a teacher I must be aware of the technological changes and advancements. It is important to keep up in order to better educate and incorporate it into my classroom.

  5. It is amazing how much technology has transformed the classroom since I have been in elementary school. I wonder how it will be when my three year old daughter is in high school. I think by that time, she will have an IPAD for a text book. I feel it is very important for teachers to stay updated with the current technology.

  6. I also think that a website is a great way to communicate with parents. This is also a great way to communicate with students. On your website a teacher can post school information, as well as classroom information.

  7. I believe having a teacher website is a great idea! Others can view what is going on in the classroom and maybe view course material as well. Also using email is a great way to stay in touch with parents and other teachers who are teaching the same course in another school. A suggestion box on the teacher's web site would be another way to connect and communicate with other instructors, parents, and students as well.
