Standard four says that teachers should “Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility”. The teacher should know what is going on locally and globally and teacher about those things. Exhibiting legal and ethical behavior in the classroom is very crucial for teachers to do. Students are very attentive and notice things that are going on and then normally share them with other people. If the teacher practices what he or she preaches, the students are likely to follow in the same footsteps. The teacher needs to teach about the different copyright laws and the proper way to document sources. They need to know that if they get it from the internet that it is not their work, it is someone else's work and they need to be acknowledged for it. The teacher needs to be able to address the diversity of the students. This can be done by doing multiple different things with the computer, rather than just one thing over and over. The teacher needs to model the right way to use technology and teach the students how to use it responsibly. It would be very neat to have an assignment for the students to do that involves communicating with someone in a total different area and learn about their culture. The computer is a great tool to do this with. Of course, the teacher would have to make sure that this would not be harmful to the students or anything like that. I believe I will use these techniques in my classroom.

Copyrights are such a big deal and most students will not realize that! I agree that it is our job as teachers to stress how important it is to be responsible while on the internet.
ReplyDeleteTeachers are the leader of the classroom and what they do in the eyes of their students is definitely something they need to be aware of at all times. In order to teach students content, you can use different aspects of the same topic to teach it in different ways in order to meet all students in your classroom. You have some really good points in your intrepretation of this standard.
ReplyDeleteIt is very important that students understand copyrights. Even I didn't know just how many copyrights there could be on various things, so it should be mentioned more often.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea how careful one must be when being aware of copyright laws. Nor did I know or understand the concept of fair use laws that teachers are subject to. Now that I am aware of the exact guidelines I feel as though I can better educate my future students on such a strict subject matter.
ReplyDeleteI feel that it is an important lesson for teachers to teach their students about copyright laws so that they could protect the students and themselves as professional educators.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you talk about copyright laws. As teachers, we are the ones who are responsible for teaching this. I feel that this should be done early because many students now a days just take pictures offline without knowing that proper copyright laws.
ReplyDeleteAnother ideal would be for students to act out the right way and the wrong way of how to practice legal and ethical behavior. The students can write a script and then act it out of how to handle and fix the situation. Also, there can be questions on quizzes or tests on ethical and legal behavior when pertaining to intellectual property and copyrighted material.
